چکیده
A major component of the information conveyed in utterances is predicateargument relationships. For example, "The girl pushed the boy" conveys a predicate-argument relationship between the verb 'push' and the nouns 'the girl' and 'the boy' appearing right before and after it. However, many of our utterances convey predicate-argument relationships between distant elements, pronounced in two different clauses. For example, in "The teacher watched the boy [who the girl pushed __ yesterday]", 'the boy' is interpreted as the object of the pushing incident even though it is uttered at an earlier stage of production.

Most researchers working on the interface between conceptual categories and argument realization assume that only some aspects of the former are relevant to the latter. These are the only conceptual components relevant for the basic distribution of roots in syntactic structure. I call these Grammatically Relevant Ontological Categories. Among the ongoing challenges are to isolate the grammatica...

Drawing upon a large corpus of naturally-occurring data, I show that the modal in an epistemic would equative serves to mark the FOCUS of the utterance, thus requiring that an OPEN PROPOSITION (in the sense of Prince 1986) be contextually salient, with the post-copular constituent serving as the instantiation of the variable of that open proposition (OP). The information structure of the episte...

Generative works over the last few decades have focused mostly on deriving the word order and hierarchical relations of these three genitives, as well as on deriving their possible interpretations. However, very often, these analyses seem to overgenerate, such that speaker judgment on genitive acceptability is frequently lower than what would be predicted on the basis of those analyses. In this...

Phonological selectivity is a phenomenon where children avoid certain target words, which they deem as too ‘difficult’ due to their phonological characteristics. The present study examines selectivity in the acquisition of complex onsets and codas in English, and specifically the acquisition of patterns of biconsonantal (CC) clusters in each position, compared to triconsonantal (CCC) clusters. ...

I will give a gentle introduction to equivariant vector bundles on toric varieties, an emerging research area in which a combination of combinatorial and geometric methods can be used to test difficult general questions about algebraic vector bundles. For instance, does every complete algebraic variety have a nontrivial vector bundle on it? Thursday, October 18 4:15 p.m. Room 380-F http://math....
